If you really want to eliminate the backfiring (I wish mine would do it more often,- I occasionally get a little "pop" when closing the throttle while shifting), I recommend getting the Clymer manual. It contains detailed pictures of the carburator, including the white spacer. Detailed instructions for eliminating backfire and improving low and mid-acceleration can be found in an article from RIDER magazine which I believe is on Bruce Clark's homepage. At least it used to be.
